Always remembering

Henry

Fireman loving Henry was a happy, loving and clever boy. He loved spending time and playing with his brother, Oliver, and dressing up as a firefighter. Henry passed away when he was 7 years old on 26th March 2023.

Henry’s story

Just before Henry’s fourth birthday he started to feel unwell and became withdrawn. Over the course of a month, he stopped eating, had no energy and started to complain of pains when he walked. He just wasn’t himself.

After a couple of visits to the GP and no improvement, the family were referred to the Children’s Assessment Unit at the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham.

Initially, a virus or infection was suspected but in early June, an MRI scan revealed a large tumour in his abdomen. Further tests confirmed that he had high-risk neuroblastoma with n-myc amplification.

Enduring more during his treatment than most people during a lifetime, and with an attitude of 'just getting on with it', Henry was given the appropriate nickname 'Henry the Brave'.

"Even in the darkest of times you could still get a thumbs up or would be lasered by his Buzz Lightyear blaster!"

Henry’s dad, Graham

In June 2019, Henry started with eight rounds of chemotherapy on the Rapid COJEC regime followed by two more rounds of TVD. This allowed him to have a stem cell harvest at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

On 19th December 2019, Henry underwent a seven-hour surgery to remove his tumour and part of his liver. Sadly, this meant Christmas 2019 was spent in hospital but the PCCU and E39 wards at QMC were amazing.

After completing frontline treatment in December 2020, and thanks to the support received for his fundraising campaign, Henry was able to enrol on the bivalent vaccine clinical trial in New York. Henry completed the trial in January 2022 but in June 2022, routine scans showed he had relapsed. He continued to receive treatment for the relapse.

Beautiful Henry passed away on 26th March 2023.

"Such a brave little boy. Our hearts are shattered. Henry relapsed in June 22 and has been stoically undergoing treatment since then. Heartbroken to share that he passed away on Sunday 26th March. Sleep peacefully little one."
