Nellie-Rose
Nellie-Rose is seven, has been in remission since June 2021 and is doing well. She’s smart, funny and full of life despite all she has been through. She radiates happiness and always has a smile on her face.
Nellie-Rose’s story
In February 2020, Nellie-Rose’s mum, Leighann took her to A&E after she struggled using her right leg. Scans initially came back clear, and the family were advised to return the next day for blood tests. The next day she was referred to the Orthopaedic team and booked in for an MRI.
Nellie-Rose had her first MRI in March at Pembury Hospital in Tunbridge Wells, where results showed lesions on her hips and her parents were given a possible diagnosis of Leukaemia. A further ultrasound at Maidstone Hospital revealed a tumour in her stomach, and doctors confirmed she had Stage 4 cancer.
Nellie-Rose underwent a full-body CT scan, had a Hickman line inserted into her chest, and then biopsies taken. On the 30th March 2020, Nellie-Rose’s parents were given the devastating news that their gorgeous and brave daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma.
Nellie-Rose started frontline treatment immediately and received induction chemotherapy, surgery, high-dose chemotherapy, a stem cell harvest, radiotherapy and lastly immunotherapy treatment.
Her end-of-treatment scans in the summer of 2021 showed the wonderful news that Nellie-Rose was ‘no evidence of disease’. Thanks to the incredible support for Nellie-Rose's campaign, an incredible £195,000 was raised meaning she was able to enrol on the bivalent vaccine clinical trial in New York.
Since completing the clinical trial in July 2022, Nellie-Rose remains in remission and has started primary school full-time.
Solving Kids' Cancer UK's children's fundraising campaigns
Funds raised will go towards helping Nellie-Rose should she need further treatment not available through the NHS. Nellie-Rose's cancer, high-risk neuroblastoma is aggressive with high rates of relapse. At relapse, the chance of survival is extremely low. If Nellie-Rose no longer needs the funds or is in remission five years post the end of treatment, the funds will be used to support other children and families affected by neuroblastoma through our activities.
