My journey started with wee Oscar…

Back in 2012 I learnt about wee Oscar Knox. He had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer.

I started to follow his story through the updates his parents would share through social media and couldn’t help but feel for them all; it seemed so unfair. They were fundraising with Solving Kids’ Cancer to be able to take Oscar abroad for pioneering therapy and needed thousands of pounds. I wanted to do something to help, and that’s when I decided I would cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh to raise funds. I managed to get over £3,000.

A couple of months later, in November 2012, I was sat at home suffering from the cold/flu; it was the first time I’d been off sick in 20 years! This is when the idea came to me (although it would come to fruition much later) … Let’s get a group together to cycle to Lisbon to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions winning the European Cup AND raise tens of thousands for charity.

Back to 2013, having done the first cycle for Oscar, I now wanted to do something bigger. So I got a large group together and organised a cycle from five different points in the UK, all headed for Belfast, Oscar’s hometown. The group combined raised over £40,000 for his campaign – we were over the moon.

My cycling and fundraising didn’t stop there. As a positive legacy for wee Oscar, I took part in Solving Kids’ Cancer’s Cycling Santas in December 2014, which was a mammoth ride from London to Glasgow over 7 days. I was really pleased to be able to raise another £3,000.

Then in May 2015, to recognise the first anniversary of Oscar’s passing, I cycled from Forres to Glasgow to show support for another wee child fighting neuroblastoma, Eileidh Patterson. Fortunate to have such a supportive network, I raised another £3000.

It was after this ride that I turned my thoughts back to my big Lisbon idea, and here we are today.

The Road to Lisbon…

The biggest event yet! Over 30 of us – all Celtic Fans – will set off from Celtic Park on 11 May for the National Stadium in Lisbon. We’re super excited and have been training and fundraising hard over the last few months.

We’ve raised £17,500 so far and would love to smash £20,000 before the event. If you’d like to make a donation click here for our fundraising page, or you can text, LISB17 £1, £5 or £10 to 70070. As well as for Solving Kids’ Cancer, we’re raising funds to support Children in Crossfire and the Celtic FC Foundation.

“Wee Oscar inspired me to start fundraising through cycling challenges. He still inspires me today. When I think of the difficulties he faced, his family too, that’s enough to keep my legs moving and to keep me fundraising. If I can help other children and families like Oscar and his family, I will keep doing what I’m doing!”
